Copperleaf Supports Our Local Tech Community at nwHacks 2019

At Copperleaf®, one of our cultural tenets is to “inspire others to reach their potential” and one way to do this is by supporting young talent in our local tech community. In late January, we proudly sponsored nwHacks 2019, the largest hackathon in Western Canada, and helped create an amazing experience for over 700 students.

Held each year at UBC, nwHacks is a 24-hour hackathon that provides an environment for budding technologists to hone their skills and make their innovative ideas a reality. Hackers had all the support they needed to succeed, from the large group of volunteers and mentors, to the free food and drinks, to the various games and contests on-site when a breather was needed! Hackathons are great places for students to deep dive into learning how to use new technology stacks and tools while having industry mentors help them get over any blockers they may encounter.

As a sponsor of the event, Copperleaf provided both financial support and people power to help the hackers succeed. Five of our employees — DevOps engineers Masur Ho and Simon Staszkiewicz; software developers Serena Chan, Anna Leong and Gary Tse — volunteered as mentors over the weekend to help answer questions about software and hardware product development.

Without the financial support of our sponsors, nwHacks wouldn’t be able to give hackers the experience we’re known to bring each year. Apart from building amazing projects with help from mentors, many hackers come to hackathons to meet people from both local and international tech companies in a collaborative forum. It was really nice to see my Copperleaf coworkers being great mentors and supporting what I’ve been working on this past year!

As Copperleaf continues to experience rapid growth, we are always looking to recruit from different avenues and sponsoring hackathons is a great way to meet new talent. Having our employees volunteer as mentors also allows them to act as ambassadors who can speak about the work we do and the type of company culture we have.

We are always looking for talented individuals to join our rapidly expanding team. Check out our careers page and see if Copperleaf is the right place for you.
