Copperleaf Wins 2016 Emerging Company of the Year

The Copperleaf team attended the 23rd annual Technology Impact Awards (TIA) on June 7th, and I am absolutely thrilled to announce that Copperleaf was named 2016 Emerging Company of the Year!

The TIAs were founded in 1994 by the BC Tech Association to celebrate the successes of our industry and the companies, people and innovation that continue to put British Columbia on the map. The awards honor companies in nine categories, divided amongst three distinct groups: Technology, Company and Personal Recognition.

Getting Involved in the TIAs

This year, I had the opportunity to participate in the entire process—first as a company preparing our responses and submitting our award application back in February, and throughout the spring as Chair of the Judging Committee, responsible for reviewing the applications and assisting in the selection of winners (and no, I was not on the Emerging Company of the Year judging committee!). And let me tell you, it was no easy task!

The BC Tech Association received nearly 150 submissions from over 110 companies of all sizes across the entire province…for 10 categories! My favorite part of the process was getting to learn about the many unique and innovative technologies that are being developed right in my backyard. As Bill Tam, President and CEO of BC Tech said: “The 2016 TIAs finalists and winners all demonstrate the vast potential for BC Tech and our opportunity to be among the leading tech ecosystems on a global scale.”

Culture is Key to Success

For Copperleaf, this wasn’t our first time applying. Last year, we were a finalist for Team of the Year, for developing a unique culture that has had a measurable impact on our growth. It was truly an honor to make it that far, given the number and caliber of all the other contenders.

This year, it was so exciting to hear our name called at the awards gala, and even more exciting to take home the award to celebrate with the entire Copperleaf team! The Emerging Company of the Year Award focuses on a company’s excellence in:

  • growth
  • innovation
  • market opportunity
  • leadership

This is a significant achievement for us because we’ve come a long way in the past few years and it’s a testament to the ongoing commitment and hard work of the entire team. It is also a demonstration of how our culture is the backbone of our success, driving us to deliver exceptional value to our customers and to continuously improve, grow and innovate as a company.

I’d like to conclude with a quote from Amrik Virk, Minister of Technology, Innovation, and Citizens’ Services, who wrote a letter of congratulations that said: “It is an exciting time for B.C.’s technology sector and it is companies like Copperleaf that are creating well-paying jobs for British Columbians and enhancing our profile on the world stage.”

The BC Tech Association has uploaded a Flickr album with all of the photos from the event. Feel free to take a look and get inspired for next year!
