Meet our Talent Acquisition team—a global team distributed across Canada, Singapore, and the UK. In this article, they share some insights on our hiring process, culture, and what it’s like working at Copperleaf.
What does the Talent Acquisition team do?
Rochelle: “Talent Acquisition collaborates with our internal teams to understand their hiring needs and help match them with the right talent—both internally and externally—to build exceptional teams. We’re often the first point of contact candidates have with Copperleaf so we really do our best to be supportive and open throughout the interview process.”
Can you tell us about your professional background and what led you to Copperleaf?
Connor: “I started my career as a technical recruiter at TEKsystems, an IT staffing and services firm in Vancouver. I was attracted to Copperleaf based on its culture and reputation, which I had heard about through my social circle. When I went through the interview process, I was impressed with the team and how everyone spoke about the culture and work environment. Copperleaf also offered challenging and dynamic work as well as a lot of growth opportunities. I felt like it was a good fit and I haven’t been disappointed!”
Danielle: “My background is in business partnering, talent acquisition, and HR operations. What attracted me most to Copperleaf was the opportunity to learn and grow with the organization and be part of a company that strives to ensure each employee is well taken care of in terms of career growth, work-life balance, health and wellness, and more.”
I can fully empathize with being in a candidate’s shoes and know how nerve-wracking the interview process can be. My advice is: try to have fun and feel free to ask us anything that’s important to you in making a decision to join Copperleaf—your questions are just as important as ours!
What is your favourite thing about working in talent acquisition?
Connor: “My favourite thing about working in talent acquisition is the opportunity to meet and collaborate with so many incredible colleagues as well as candidates who are interested in joining this great team! I’m honored to be the first person candidates speak with during the interview process and enjoy being able to share Copperleaf’s story with them.”
Rochelle: “I love contributing to the growth of the company and seeing the business impact of hiring talented individuals who elevate their teams and thrive at Copperleaf. I enjoy learning about people and hearing how their career history brought them to where they are today. As well, driving Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives is really important to our team and helping Copperleaf improve in this area has been incredibly rewarding.”
Angela: “My favourite thing about working in talent acquisition is having the chance to interact with talented candidates and learn about the strengths of each person, so that I can look for opportunities to place the right people in the right roles. I also work on an incredible team—we work hard, support one another, and have fun!”
What is your advice for someone considering a role at Copperleaf?
Rochelle: “I can fully empathize with being in a candidate’s shoes and know how nerve-wracking the interview process can be. My advice is: try to have fun and feel free to ask us anything that’s important to you in making a decision to join Copperleaf—your questions are just as important as ours! Also, if there isn’t an open position on the careers page that matches your skill set, I still recommend reaching out to us because there are always new roles on the horizon.”
How do you strive to provide a positive experience to candidates?
Danielle: “I like to help candidates get a sense of our culture and working environment, and provide information they’re unable to source online, such as:
- what a typical day on the job might look like
- an outline of the interview process, estimated timelines, and next steps
- answers to any questions or concerns they might have”
Rochelle: “I never lose sight of how impactful a career change is to someone and how important it is to hire people who will enjoy their role and thrive at Copperleaf. We always focus on a people-first approach to recruitment and commit to being open, honest, and communicative at every stage of the hiring process.”
How do you stay current with hiring trends?
Connor: “Continuous learning and improving is part of Copperleaf’s culture. We listen to industry podcasts, read books and articles, and attend training events to help us improve our skills, expand our knowledge, and stay abreast of the latest best practices and hiring trends.”
What attracted me most to Copperleaf was the opportunity to learn and grow with the organization and be part of a company that strives to ensure each employee is well taken care of in terms of career growth, work-life balance, health and wellness, and more.
What does Copperleaf’s culture look like?
Emma: “Growth, collaboration, and personal development are all at the heart of our culture. For example, I joined the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) team when it was half the size it is now. I started out managing operations for our region, and as we expanded, I worked with my team lead to figure out how my interests and skills could best benefit the team and company. Ultimately, I love the people side of the business and have been encouraged and supported in my transition to the Talent Acquisition team.”
Angela: “I enjoy working in an environment that supports career growth and development. Our culture encourages me to provide exceptional value and extraordinary experiences to internal and external stakeholders, build strong relationships, and work hard to do the best I can. Most importantly, there is always space to learn and improve.”
Rochelle: “Copperleaf has grown quickly over the past few years, expanding to 16 different countries, and having the support of my coworkers has allowed me to try new things and develop my career path. On top of this, my family lives abroad and it’s meant a lot to me to have the trust and flexibility to work remotely while visiting them.”
Connor: “Being open and respectful are two of Copperleaf’s cultural tenets that are really important to me. Being open to the perspectives, ideas, and opinions of others allows you to expand your own mindset and view problems through another lens. Being respectful ensures that we create a safe environment for Copperleafers to share their thoughts openly.”
Danielle: “Copperleaf has a great culture that ensures that each and every employee is well taken care of in terms of growth opportunities, helping one another, work-life balance, and more. The culture helps us excel in our roles and grow with the organization.”
One of Copperleaf's cultural tenets is to always improve. What steps are we taking to improve Diversity, Equity and Inclusion?
Rochelle: To build an exceptional team, it’s essential that we have DE&I at the forefront of our minds and integrated into our talent acquisition processes. Copperleaf has a flexible work environment that allows people to carve out a schedule that works for them and we’re always open to a candidate’s questions and requests to support their work, life, and family integration. Partnering with underrepresented groups is key to moving the needle on diversity in tech and joining BC Tech’s Digital Lift Internship program to upskill 200 individuals from underrepresented groups is great start to contribute to this movement.
What are you looking forward to in the next year?
Emma: “I'm so excited by the growth in the EMEA region. As a geographically dispersed team, its crucial to present a true picture of what daily life on the EMEA team looks like. We work extra hard to ensure employees are committed and engaged, and make sure they have fun in their jobs!”
How do you spend your time outside of work?
Emma: “Hanging out with my two little people is at the top of my list. We are seeing the silver lining of ‘staycations’, having spent the summer exploring the beauty of our homeland of Scotland. And I never say no to chilling with a glass of wine either!”
Angela: “I love to hike, cook, travel, and connect with friends, but most of all, I love to spend time with my family. I spend most of my weekends soaking up BC’s outdoors with my husband and our three-year-old daughter. Being a parent has been one of the greatest joys and challenges of my life, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world!”
Connor: “I really enjoy playing basketball, hanging out with my wife and our puppy Chance, and catching up with friends. I’m hoping to get back into playing music (trumpet and piano) again in the near future.”
Danielle: “I spend most of my free time with my family which includes my husband and our two furkids (puppies). My ideal day off would take place at a park or dog café where our furkids can socialize and play with other pups. In the evening, I love enjoying a nice and relaxing dinner with my husband. Nothing beats a weekend of quality time!"
