Meet David Carter, one of the practice leads on the Customer Experience (CX) team at Copperleaf™. David sat down with us to provide some insight into his current role, how his professional journey led him to Copperleaf, his experience working here, and how his skill set has grown during his time at Copperleaf.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at Copperleaf? What is the focus of your team?
I’ve been part of the Customer Experience team for two years, beginning as a Senior Consultant and Project Manager before becoming Practice Lead for the Electrical Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team last year. My team focuses on implementing the Copperleaf C55™ Decision Analytics solution within electrical T&D utilities across North America. We provide consulting services to help our clients maximize the return on their capital investments and programs.
Every day on the job can be quite different. Each customer has different business drivers, strategic objectives, and constraints, which makes every implementation unique. My team is responsible for running workshops, configuring and troubleshooting software, and working with large integrated teams to ensure that we’re able to meet all of our customer’s requirements. My team is also challenged with providing client feedback to the Copperleaf R&D team so that our software solutions will continue to evolve and address the needs of our T&D customers in the future.
Can you tell us a little bit about your professional journey that has led you to Copperleaf?
I attended the University of British Columbia and graduated with a combined Civil Engineering Honours & Commerce degree. After graduating, I was hired by Kiewit where I had the opportunity to gain a wide range of experience in a variety of roles, such as Field Engineer, Project Engineer, and Superintendent. As the project I was working on came to a close, I began looking for a new career which would challenge my technical skills while also leveraging the communication and management skills from my past experience.
How did you find the transition into this industry and how was your training and growth supported when you first joined the company?
Prior to joining Copperleaf, I did not consider myself a competitive candidate for a technology career due to my lack of computer science skills and experience. Copperleaf did an excellent job of helping me transition by putting me through a three-week new employee training program which focused on different areas, such as our products, implementation approach, team structure, and market segments. Shortly after training, Copperleaf gave me my first opportunity to work directly with a client, and I began working on a project with ENMAX Generation. It was a great chance for me to learn quickly using the soft skills I had transferred from my previous career while rapidly developing the technical skills required for the role.
What have you found to be the most unique aspect of working at Copperleaf?
I believe that our culture is the most unique aspect of working here. It is an excellent place to work, as the company really supports employee development and empowers us to make decisions. The culture here is based on teamwork, with everyone working towards common goals aimed at improving our software products and ensuring the success of our customers.
How has your skill set grown since you’ve been at Copperleaf? What are some of the key things you’ve learned?
Working in the tech industry has allowed me to learn a variety of technical skills in different areas, from product development and databases, to development languages. I have also found that my communication and soft skills have improved substantially while working at Copperleaf. As mentioned before, the culture here is very empowering and has allowed me to grow and develop my leadership skills. Leading both client and internal meetings of all sizes has taught me how to manage discussions and drive decisions and results.
What are some of the projects you’ve been working on?
Over the past year and a half, I’ve been largely focusing on a number of projects with Southern California Edison (SCE), including two pilot projects and the implementation of C55. Other customers I have worked with include Ameren Illinois, as well as ENMAX Generation.
What do you feel is the most fulfilling part of the job?
I have always enjoyed finding solutions to challenging problems, and at Copperleaf I am constantly working to solve the problems our customers are facing. We are able to make an impact by developing the best technical solutions for them—and hearing that we’ve exceeded our customer’s expectations is truly fulfilling.
It’s incredibly rewarding for me to be able to work with my team and help to develop our new employees into skilled consultants who become the leaders of tomorrow.
