Climate Emergency Action Planning: Guidance for Asset-Owning Organisations

The climate emergency is a critical topic for the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) and its patrons. The IAM is committed to sharing best practice, with an aim to embed the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other environmental and social drivers into an enhanced asset management approach—a key component of which will be targeted strategies and actions to address the climate emergency.

In support of this aim, the IAM formed the Climate Emergency Programme (ICEP) where thought leaders from different organisations and industries actively promote attention to the climate emergency, to share experiences, and to better influence the delivery of sustainable solutions.

The ICEP recently published a white paper on Climate Emergency Action Planning. This document provides practical guidance to the asset management community on how to approach the climate emergency challenge and where to access additional information and knowledge.

It demonstrates how the existing approach to developing asset management strategies and plans can be enhanced to address this challenge. It also describes how to assess and plan asset adaptation strategies within a changing environment and provides guidance on how to develop plans to mitigate climate change through the reduction or elimination of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
